Sorry for the awful pun but we couldn’t resist. Terrible jokes aside, it’s actually very true, if you’ve ever considered learning to play a musical instrument then the ukulele could be the one you’re looking for.

Uke’s are great fun. They are relatively cheap to buy, you can pick one up online or in a dedicated music store. They are easy to carry, take up very little space around the house and they produce a sound that makes everyone smile.

The best thing about the ukulele is that they are relatively easy to learn. The instrument has just four strings and you really only need to master three chords C, F and G7 to be able to play a whole assortment of songs from Singing in the Rain to Rock Around the Clock.

The ukulele is not just for new-comers, if you’ve already mastered another instrument like the guitar then it’s another string to add to your bow (sorry, more terrible puns!). And although it’s quickly rewarding, it’s incredible how advanced ukulele playing can get.

The other great thing about the ukulele is that it’s a really sociable instrument. There are ukulele clubs, groups, bands, jams and whole orchestras all over the country. There’s probably one near you. Joining a ukulele group is a great way to meet new people, learn, play and sing together. What could be more fun?

Most ukulele groups take new members at any level of knowledge or experience. You could take a few one to one lessons if you want to sharpen your skills before joining a club.

The best type of ukulele for beginners is the soprano ukulele. Soprano ukes are the most traditional and also generally cheaper than the larger styles, so if you’re a beginner or you’re on a budget, the soprano is the way to go.

There are lots of good ukulele books and tutorials available online. We really like the Justin Guitar series on Youtube. His teaching style is very easy to follow and his enthusiasm is infectious. Check out lesson one below.

Once you’ve mastered the basics, all you need is a Hawaiian shirt and a straw hat to complete the look and you’ll be entertaining your friends and family in no time!

Fun Fact

The ukulele first came to light when Madeiran immigrants brought it to Hawaii in the 19th century. By the 1920s, millions were sold across America and most households owned one. Famous ukulele players include Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix and the actor Gary Oldman.
