The World’s Favourite Circus
For more than thirty years Cirque du Soleil has thrilled and astounded audiences all over the world. At the same time the company has managed to successfully re-invent circus as a modern, contemporary art form.
Cirque du Sole began life in Montreal in 1984, the brainchild of Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croixa, who brought together a company of 20 street performers to create their first production, Le Grand Tour du Cirque du Soleil.
In 1990 the company produced its first major international success, Nouvelle Expérience. The shows’ theatrical, character-driven approach and the absence of performing animals helped define Cirque du Soleil’s signature style.
Cirque du Soleil expanded rapidly through the 1990s and 2000s, growing from one show to nineteen shows, performing in over 300 cities on every continent except Antarctica. Each Cirque du Soleil production is unique with its own theme and storyline. The productions are a fusion of circus styles from around the world with live music, incredible costumes, breath-taking sets and mesmerising performances that merge circus with theatre, dance, acrobatics and a host of other artistic influences. This heady mixture produces a visual style that is instantly identifiable and uniquely Cirque de Soleil.
Today the company employs almost 5000 people, including 1,300 artists from around 50 countries and generates an annual revenue of in the region of one billion dollars. The organization has brought wonder and delight to over 180 million spectators with its productions. The company’s many permanent Las Vegas shows alone play to more than 9,000 people a night.
