That’s right, “It’s good to talk.”
It’s been a quarter of a century since Bob Hoskins uttered those immortal words in a series of television commercials for British Telecom but we all remember that famous slogan and it’s more important now than ever!
The campaign first appeared on our screens in the mid-nineties and proved so successful with the audience that it ran for five years, incorporating a string of different ads all ending with Bob reminding us, with his cheeky grin and cockney drawl, “It’s good to talk.”
The choice of Hoskins, who at that time was best known for playing a hard-men and gangsters in films like The Long Good Friday and Mona Lisa, seems like an unlikely one but it proved to be a stroke of genius. And it was no accident, the ad-makers deliberately choose Bob to connect to the male audience who, at that time, were statistically much less likely to use the telephone for a chat.
The ads were a huge hit, not only with men but with everyone and the slogan, and Bob, became synonymous with having a good natter on the blower.
In this modern era of emails and text messages it’s important to remember how special it is to hear a familiar voice, even if it is only at the end of a phone. Remember what Bob says….
